( 11TH Jan ‘25)

Our opponents this Saturday are Stafford RFC whom we last played on the 12th of October 2024, when the result was 46-14 to KCs.

Stafford is a very old rugby club, founded in 1876 and the first match played was on the 24th February 1876, Stafford v Newport, with Stafford winning by "one goal and two tries to one goal" The club played at several locations but by 1912 it had moved to a ground where what was Dorman's Works stands, on the Tixall Rd. During the First World War all of the team joined the Army, of which only two players returned. A photo of this team is on display in the club house. After the war the Club played at a ground on Rickerscote Rd, changing in the Bath Inn, near Tenterbanks, and players had to walk or cycle to the ground.

In 1949 the Club moved to a new ground at Castlefields Newport Road under a 99 year lease from Lord Stafford. Having its own ground had a huge effect on improving standards, with many players representing firstly North Midlands, then, when it was recognised as a full county in its own right, Staffordshire. In 1964 Staffordshire became a Senior County and with several players from Stafford in the team, won theCounty Championship in 1970 beating Gloucestershire 11 – 9.

In 2019 Stafford moved again after many years of planning and discussion with their Club Patron Lord Stafford to a new ground and clubhouse at Blackberry Lane, Doxey.

At the start of the season Stafford lost at home to Spartans 15-18, won their next game at home 45-17 against Wolverhampton, lost away at Sutton Coldfield 57-7, and won at home against Newport (Salop) 27-13.

In October they lost in Kidderminster 46-14, won at home against Willenhall 45-26, and lost away at Veseyans 50-14. In November Stafford lost 10-38 to Newcastle, were heavily defeated at Burntwood 78-14 and at the end of the month lost to Telford 27-37. On December14th Stafford lost at Wolverhampton 37-8 and on the 21st lost at home to Sutton Coldfield 7-41. Last Saturday at Newport they lost 38-26.

Stafford lie 11th in the league table on 17 points, with 10 losses and 3 wins to their name, while KCs are 5th on 36 points with 7 wins and 5 losses. This is the first League game of 2025, as fixtures last week end were postponed due to bad weather.
