A KC’s side missing several regulars cruised into the third round of the North Mids cup with a comfortable win against lower league Edwardians, second in Mids 3 West (North) and themselves understrength, but despite the convincing scoreline this was a far from vintage display by the Marlpool Lane men.
They took the lead with just two minutes played when an incisive run by Andy McLellan was carried on by fellow centre Laurence Hughes whose pass put in left wing Arthur Chiverton for the opening try.Seven minutes later skipper Rob Delahay crossed the whitewash from a five metre scrum but play was called back for a forward pass.Ed’s now had the put in but were shunted off their own ball and scrumhalf Mark James burrowed over for KC’s second try.The conversion attempt by youngster No 10 Sam Taylor rebounded off the crossbar but Kidder were soon on the scoreboard again.A sixty yard run by Chiverton was halted by a last ditch tackle into touch just short of the tryline but KC’s stole the visitors’throw and hooker Stu Such went over for a 15-0 lead.Kidder then switched off and although the Birmingham side were being overpowered up front their youthful backs, despite living on scraps, looked lively and five minutes later ran in a nice try which was converted to reduce the arrears to 15-7.
On the half hour mark veteran James showed an impressive turn of pace with a forty yard run in and Taylor, his confidence improving, added the extras. On the stroke of halftime Edwardians’ No 13 unfortunately suffered a broken leg and when play resumed McLellan found a hole in the visitors’ defence,Taylor’s conversion giving KC’s a 29-7 interval lead.
Early in the second half a KC’s lineout drive was finished off by lock Alex Baldwin and Taylor’s conversion extended their advantage to 36 - 7. A missed tackle allowed a spirited Ed’s side to run in a second try but Delahay then touched down and Taylor’s successful kick stretched the lead to 43-12. KC’s were ,however, becoming complacent, sloppy and conceding too many penalties, their intensity dropping, and they were punished when a breakout from defence by Edwardians resulted in a well deserved try for their left wing, excellently converted, to narrow the deficit to 43-19. Ed’s then carelessly allowed KC’s restart to bounce into touch and Such pounced on their throw and offloaded to prop Matt Rigsby for a try which McLellan converted to bring up the fifty points.
In the closing stages the game became very ragged and loose with both sides carelessly conceding possession and it took a fine tackle by last line of defence James Whitehouse to prevent another Ed’s score but KC’s had the last word with a second try for Chiverton on the final whistle. They will, however,be looking for a much more disciplined performance when they return to league action next week at home to Leamington.
