Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
Despite losing this RFU Intermediate Cup clash at their local rivals, this was a gutsy performance by a KC’s side who were forced into making a lot of late changes but were still in contention until the last ten minutes of the match. They missed a penalty opportunity in the very first minute but five minutes later were given another chance from virtually the same position and this time Andy McLellan made no mistake.Shortly afterwards No 8 Layton Wilkinson broke off the back of a scrum on the hosts 22 and the forwards drove on to win another penalty, converted by McLellan to double the lead to 6-0.Bridgnorth were ,however, beginning to work their way into the game and with twenty seven minutes played they scored a fine individual try which was converted to edge them ahead 7-6. KC’s response was immediate. They won possession from the restart and when Tom Such fed James Guest the winger sprinted down the left touchline for a try which was well converted by Chris Pinner to put the visitors back in front 13-7.Such was then yellow carded, the successful resulting penalty narrowing the gap to just three points, and five minutes later KC’s were forced to concede a five metre scrum after a North penalty attempt struck a post. The fourteen men were unable to defend the set piece and a converted try saw the hosts go into the break with a 17-13 lead. KC’s started the second half slowly but due in no short measure to three outstanding tackles by Will Varley they held out under ten minutes of sustained pressure until a missed tackle allowed Bridgnorth’s centre to break the line and score under the posts.Surprisingly, the simple conversion was missed.During the next fifteen minutes some needle crept into the game and North received a number of warnings from the referee before his patience eventually ran out and he produced a yellow card. Now a man to the good,KC’s took advantage and for the first time in the half were able to establish a foothold in the hosts 22 which was rewarded when prop Ben Turner crashed over the tryline, taking three defenders with him,to reduce the arrears to 22-18. Although the numbers were now evened up again,KC’s were still very much in the game until a clearance kick was run back at them by the home side for a try in the right hand corner and a nine point lead.Back came KC’s again and they were pressing hard for a score of their own but were undone by an interception try by North’s left wing who ran in from his own 22 to put the game beyond Kidder’s reach. Now tiring,KC’s conceded a last minute Chris Ashton like showboating converted try but the 39-18 final score was perhaps a little hard on them.
