Broadstreet RFC 12 KC 10
KC opened their league programme with a game against the second team of higher rated Broadstreet RFC at their impressive ground.
KC looked in control in the opening quarter and their superiority told, Ryan Tiene started a move, the ball going to Jim Tildesley with a good 30 metre break who passed to his brother George whose cross kick was gathered by Will Fallows to score. Jack O’Hagan completed the conversion.
Broadstreet tried to attack, KC defence was holding until they eventually scored on the left-hand touch, missing with the conversion. The half-time score was 5-7 to KC and soon after the re-start pressure from Kidderminster yielded a penalty slotted over by the reliable Jack O’Hagan.
Generally, KC were showing good defence from both forwards and backs, conspicuous with great tackling were Jesse Burgess, Rich Sollum, and Hakeem Hussain.
KC although playing well were finding it difficult to increase their lead. Forwards were making good territory, particularly Scott Turner, Ryan Wainwright, Hakeem Hussain and Jack Barratt coming on as a replacement. It was good to see KC holding their own in the in line-out through Matt Jones and Tom Kerrigan. There were occasions when KC sharpness in support play was lacking and allowing Broadstreet to reverse possession and gather ball.
As the second half progressed KC were making the mistake of attacking through the forwards which was where the Broadstreet strength lay. With five minutes left and KC having controlled the game, albeit with a slim lead, things changed as the KC game management went awry. Broadstreet working their way into the KC 22. KC had opportunities to clear the ball and instead played the ball in the forwards until giving a penalty . Broadstreet took the scrum option and pushed over for a try to level the scores at 10-10. Their successful conversion gave them the lead with one minute remaining.
A very disappointing result for KC players and supporters after an excellent performance.
