- defence was lacking

This was a performance that KC would want to forget. During the game KC made many errors, several of them giving Newcastle undeserved points.
The game opened with KC playing well and getting territorial advantage. Ryan Tiene was involved in a good move that gained 50 metres, however a kick ahead was neutralised by Newcastle. KC were awarded a penalty, kicked by Tom Dalton to get the first score. Newcastle replied with an unconverted try and then KC kicked a second penalty to re-take the lead. KC were working well in attack, George Tildesley made a good break down the left-hand touch, however he was adjudged to have strayed over the touchline. Ryan Tiene had a good run through the Newcastle defence to score a try which was not converted.
For KC it all fell apart either side of half-time; firstly a misunderstanding between the KC backs gave the possession to Newcastle who scored a converted try. Then early in the second half Newcastle were presented with a second try which they again converted. Newcastle scored a third converted try when the ball carrier ran past several KC players with the KC defence being non-existent. Another Newcastle try was scored despite last ditch defence by KC.
When KC brought on their substitutes they started to show some positive attacking moves. Particularly a good break by George Lloyd Jones who made 30 metres and passed to George Tildesley who scored after his own 30 metre charge. KC forwards drove close to the Newcastle line and after several attacking phases scored in front of the posts, Harry Taft converted. KC were now playing well, however in the dying moments Newcastle were awarded a penalty to give them a 23-36 victory.
KC had glimpses of their usual style but overall it was a very disappointing game. In earlier games this season KC strength had been their defence; unfortunately in this game it was not present.
