This convincing win in a crunch relegation battle saw KC’s not only leapfrog their local rivals but also climb above Old Covs and Berkswell & Balsall, who both lost, and they now sit in a much healthier eighth position in Mids Two West S with one game to go.
KC’s kick off in front of a large President’s Day crowd did not go ten metres but at the scrum back their forwards put down a marker, winning a penalty against the head which saw Andy McLellan’s kick from halfway drift wide, and they then stole the first lineout of the match on Pershore’s throw – a good start.Kidder’s backs got into the act with some slick handling and they opened the scoring when McLellan came into the line and his pass put in left wing Nick Martin for an easy finish.Another lineout steal and more good play by the threes was rounded off by opposite wing Will Varley and McLellan’s conversion via a post put KC’s ahead 12-0 with only fifteen minutes played.
Carolians were totally dominant and a fine passage of play should have ended with another try but the final pass went astray with the line beckoning.KC’s pressure was, however, relentless and a McLellan penalty after twenty five minutes increased their advantage to 15-0.Five minutes later centre Tom Scandrett charged down a Pershore kick and the visitors were forced to concede a five metre scrum but survived and in the last ten minutes of the half they began to get some sort of foothold in the match for the first time without ever really posing a point scoring threat and KC’s comfortable halftime lead could have been greater but for several missed opportunities.
The start of the second period was a different story as KC’s were penned back by a rejuvenated Pershore side and inside five minutes their No 11 fielded a kick out of defence and set off on a mazy run which saw him elude three or four would be tacklers for an outstanding individual try.The visitors continued to hold the whip hand for a good half hour and KC’s attempts to run the ball out of defence were getting them nowhere but coach Bryan Smallman rang the changes by bringing on all three replacements and eventually Kidder got their second wind.A catch and drive from a lineout was finished off with a try by prop Ben Turner to cap his man of the match performance and just two minutes later Layton Wilkinson’s power proved too much for Pershore and his try,KC’s fourth, earned a precious bonus point.Right on the whistle Pershore managed a consolation converted try but KC’s were much the better side on the day and worthy winners.
