KC's have an away day to forget as Camp Hill forwards take the day.....

Match report courtesy of Martin Easton...

In their first away fixture of the season KC’s crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of a powerful Camp Hill side who played to their strengths, using their weight and height advantage and the prodigious boot of flyhalf Simon Edwards to good effect.
Kidder actually started well, taking a 7-0 lead after only two minutes.Their kick off was knocked on by the home side whose tighthead then compounded the error by playing the ball to concede a penalty which was kicked to touch.Camps stole the throw but were forced back over their own tryline and from the resultant five metre scrum crash ball to centre James Lloyd Jones set up three successive rucks which drew in the fringe defence before flyhalf Rhys Pritchard dodged through the bodies to touch down by the posts and fullback Sam Taylor added the extras.
Ten minutes later Camps No 8 Rob Hill made a strong run off the back of a scrum midway between KC’s ten metre line and their 22.The ball was taken on by the forwards and openside Harry Cunningham almost made it to the line before offloading to player coach, centre Stephen Halbert, who touched down under the posts and Edwards duly converted to level the scores.
Although Kidder’s back three and scrumhalf Freddie Morgan were generally very assured under the high ball the visitors were being pegged back by Edwards’ boot, particularly his kicks to the corner for his right wing to chase, and unfortunately their set pieces began to fall apart, which only added to the pressure. Two lineouts were overthrown and three scrums were lost against the head,so it was no surprise that after KC’s front row had been penalised Camps opted for another five metre scrum.Hill picked up and although he was stopped just short of the line Cunningham got his hands on the ball to score the try and put the hosts ahead 12-7.
Camp Hill continued to dominate possession and territory but with twenty six minutes on the clock Kidder at last won their first lineout of the match to enable them to clear their lines and with their scrum stabilising they began to see a little more of the ball.A good catch and chase by right wing Josh Winfield took them deep into Camps 22 but a penalty allowed Edwards to clear to halfway and more lineout ball soon saw the hosts back in KC’s 22.After being awarded a penalty for careless use of the elbow by Kidder the hosts kicked to touch and their lineout drive was unstoppable, resulting in a try for their No 4,skipper Mark Newton,to extend the lead to 17-7 with Edwards conversion attempt hitting a post.
A weak kick out of defence by Camps gave KC’s a chance to run at them but a knock on when trying to gather the ball on the ten metre line scuppered the opportunity. However, following a rare Kidder lineout success Camps were penalised for handling the ball on the floor at a ruck in front of the posts and Taylor knocked over the kick to reduce the deficit to 17-10 at the interval.
Somehow, despite all their set piece problems and lack of ball KC’s had managed to look dangerous at times and were still in the game, which was testament to their tenacity and sheer cussedness but the second half began in much the same vein as most of the first with a Camps lineout steal on halfway and an Edwards kick deep into Kidder’s 22.After seven minutes a relieving kick by the visitors was run back at them and left wing Liam Lindsey and centre Mark Lisle combined before finding No 14 Rob Freeman coming off his own wing to score a well worked try.KC’s re-start did not go ten metres and just two minutes later replacement Dan Robinson collected a clearance kick and ran in a fine solo long range try which Edwards improved to put the home side ahead 29-10.
With only fifteen minutes played, after a couple of near misses and yet another lineout steal prop Ryan Large plunged over and Lindsey and Robinson then took advantage of a favourable bounce to launch a wave of attacks before a forward pass gave Kidder brief respite but after their scrum had been pushed back over their own line they could hold out no longer in the face of the relentless pressure and another replacement,Austin Bolger eventually forced his way over and Edwards’ conversion took the lead to 41-10.
KC’s showed ambition by trying to run the ball from deep at every opportunity, although it has to be said that their malfunctioning lineout meant there was little point in putting it out of play, and after one potential breakaway by Tom Maher had been thwarted second row Alex Baldwin led another breakout from the 22 and excellent handling through countless phases finally produced a two man overlap to enable Winfield to canter over for an easy finish with ten minutes left to play.
KC’s battled to the end but were still being penned back by Edwards’ boot and Camp Hill had the last word when they created space for Lindsey to touch down at the corner and as the conversion sailed wide the ref blew his whistle to bring an end to a difficult afternoon for the Marlpool Lane men which saw them slip to fifth place in Mids 2 West (N).
