Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
KCs first away match in Midlands 2 West (South) League saw too many mistakes being made which were pounced upon by a lively Newbold set of backs.
It was a promising start as KC’s pack dominated in the first 10 minutes and kept the home side pinned in their own half. However possession was turned over by Newbold at a ruck, who then broke away from their own half to score a converted try and open the scoring.
KC’s pack continued to win a good supply of possession and keep the home side in their own half and were awarded a penalty near the Newbold posts which Andy McLellan converted to make the score 7 – 3. Newbold increased their lead to 14 – 3 after another error by KCs which allowed the home side’s back to score a converted try on the left wing.
Missed tackles then allowed the Newbold centre to run through the KC defence and score an unconverted try to widen their lead to 19 – 3, after 25 minutes. The KCs pack continued to play strongly and was still winning a good amount of ball with Jack Tunstall and Matt Bennett doing well in the line-outs. With 30 minutes on the clock KCs scored an unconverted try from a line-out catch and drive to reduce the lead to 19 – 8, a score which was well deserved.
Jack Tunstall went off injured 10 minutes before half time and was replaced by Chris Pinner which led to some re-organising of the back line. Newbold had a player sin-binned for persistent infringements but there was no further scoring in the first half so the half time score was 19 – 8.
KC’s pack continued the second half dominating possession and kept the home side pinned back in their own half for 19 minutes but then, against the run of play, Newbold kicked ahead from open play and scored a converted try to make the score 26 – 8. Newbold then went on to score 3 more tries in the next 15 minutes, 1 of which was converted, to extend their lead to 45 – 8.
KC’s pack were still performing well and never gave up the battle and Matt Rigsby scored a late try to make the final score-line 45 – 13.
KC’s next fixture is on Saturday 24 September when they are away to local side Bridgnorth RFC in the RFU Intermediate Cup, kick-off is at 3 pm.
