Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
A rousing second half forwards performance saw KC’s turn this “must win” encounter on its head and the much needed morale boosting bonus point success puts them eight points clear of their fellow strugglers and also lifts them above Pershore to eighth spot in Mids 2 West (South).
In front of a decent VP’s Day crowd Kidder yet again went behind early when Upton’s No 9 made a break from a scrum on their own 22 and fed his centre who carved through for a try under the posts, duly converted, with only three minutes on the clock.Five minutes later KC’s had a let off when the visitors kicker missed a simple penalty chance and then found themselves with a man advantage when Upton’s No 13 was yellow carded.Midway through the half a series of scrums on Upton’s five metre line had them on the ropes and KC’s were eventually rewarded when No 8 Layton Wilkinson crashed over for a try which Chris Pinner converted to level the scores at 7-7.Ten minutes later a dropped pass gave the visitors scrumhalf a free run to the line from forty metres out for a try from nowhere and worse was to follow when KC’s were counter rucked off the ball on Upton’s ten metre line and their right wing ran through several flimsy tackles to score their third try, well converted from wide out to give them a healthy 19-7 halftime advantage.
KC’s kicked the restart straight into touch but ominously for the visitors won the scrumback on halfway against the head and two minutes into the half Pinner kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears. With a freshening breeze now behind them KC’s were playing with more purpose and positional changes behind the scrum brought about a noticeable improvement in their shape.A surge led by Tom Maher won another penalty opportunity but the ball toppled off the tee as Pinner was in the act of kicking, resulting in his only miss of the afternoon.A double substitution by coach Bryan Smallman, bringing on Matt Rigsby and Matt Bennett, gave the pack fresh legs and KC’s superior scrummaging power was having a real influence on the game.Just seconds after being adjudged to have been held up over the line, man of the match Wilkinson bulldozed over emphatically for his second try, again improved by Pinner, and by midway through the half KC’s forwards were totally dominant with Upton posing very little attacking threat.
A good long kick by James Whitehouse, back after a long injury lay off, forced the visitors to concede a defensive lineout and KC’s drove over only for the ref,not particularly well positioned,to again rule that they had been held up but the reprieve was short lived as the resulting five metre scrum saw replacement prop Rigsby go over for a try to put KC’s ahead for the first time,22-19.Pinner added the extras and ten minutes from time he broke from a scrum on Upton’s 22 and an exchange between winger Will Varley and centre Jake Evetts saw KC’s skipper cut back inside to cross for the bonus point try, again well converted by the in form Pinner.KC’s resisted a late Upton flourish to deny them the consolation of two possible bonus points and can look forward to a testing away fixture at second in the table Barkers Butts in much better heart.
