Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
Local derbies conjure up images of cut and thrust, blood and thunder encounters but the first half of this match was a lacklustre, flat affair with little to enthuse the spectators.
Despite having the advantage of the wind behind them,KC’s were mostly on the back foot in the opening exchanges but three times won turnover ball in their own 22 to keep the visitors at bay.Their kicking out of defence, however, left a lot to be desired as they repeatedly failed to find touch and after twenty five uneventful minutes they chanced their arm once too often when Droitwich ran the ball back at them and their hooker carved his way to the line and withstood a last ditch tackle to touch down for a 5-0 lead,at which point No 6 Matt Bennett, who had been struggling with a back injury, was replaced by Scott Lovell.
KC’s had to wait thirty eight minutes for their first scoring opportunity,Chris Pinner’s penalty missing the target, but on the stroke of halftime the flyhalf made amends with a successful kick and Kidder, who had never really got going, were relieved to go into the break trailing only 5-3.
Three minutes into the second half another defensive turnover seemed to rejuvenate KC’s and they at last started to take the game to the visitors.Nathan Small’s introduction into the pack gave added solidity and an attacking lineout set up a forwards drive which was finished off by a first senior try for prop Joe Nicklin.A transformed home side now had Droitwich rattled and the visitors had a let off when an eminently kickable KC’s penalty hit a post but a fluid passage of play ended with a well taken try by Lovell. At 13-5 ahead Kidder appeared to have the game under control but a yellow card for second row Jack Tunstall, who reacted when provoked, proved to be a turning point as within four minutes of his departure a converted Droitwich try reduced the deficit to just 13-12.A Pinner penalty briefly gave KC’s breathing space with a 16-12 lead but minutes from the final whistle the fourteen men were denied the win which their second half performance thoroughly deserved when Droitwich got away with two forward passes to score in the left corner and pinch the points.KC’s had to console themselves with a losing bonus point whilst Droitwich went away with all four,an outcome which even their own supporters had to admit was hardly merited.Ultimately though,KC’s had only themselves to blame and must dust themselves down and hope that they get the rub of the green when they visit Leamington on Saturday.
