Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
A terrible start to both halves of this match saw KC’s suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of a rampant Leamington and as a result they have slipped to third from bottom in Mids 2 West (South).
Leamington opened their account after just two minutes when KC’s backs were caught offside and the hosts’ No 9 kicked the penalty via an upright. The scrumhalf then set his right wing free down the blindside from a setpiece deep in Leamington’s half. The No 14 made a lot of ground before he was hauled down by flyhalf Chris Pinner but the home side quickly moved the ball left from the breakdown and created a huge overlap to canter over for the opening try.Straight from the restart Leamington ran the ball back at the visitors fragile defence for a second try, this time converted, and KC’s found themselves 15-0 down with only eight minutes on the clock and the game looked lost already.Still on the rack,KC’s were at last able to relieve the relentless pressure when the hosts, again with men over, threw a wayward pass which was intercepted by centre Andy McLellan who ran sixty metres into the Leamington 22 before he was chased down.Winger Will Varley was up in support but McLellan’s pass to him was deliberately knocked on by the home side’s only defender. The ref gave KC’s a penalty, converted by Pinner, but he might easily have awarded a penalty try and yellow carded the offender but chose to do neither.
The score lifted KC’s and a series of pick and drives by their forwards, who were more than a match for Leamington in the loose, proved very effective and Kidder held their own for the next twenty minutes until a crossing offence gave Leamington the chance to extend their lead with another penalty. Two minutes before the interval the forwards hard work was rewarded when KC’s set up a catch and drive from an attacking lineout and from the resulting rucks second row Nathan Small eventually crashed over for a try, converted by Pinner,to reduce the halftime deficit to only 18-10 which was pretty encouraging considering their dreadful start and the constant threat posed by Leamington’s slick backs who, it has to be said, were helped no end by being allowed to be almost permanently offside.
KC’s were still in the game but if their start to the first half had been bad,the opening to the second period was nothing less than calamitous with twenty one unanswered points conceded in the first six minutes.Their kick off was fielded by Leamington who ran the ball back at Kidder without a hand being laid on them to score within twenty seconds and the extras were added.KC’s then lost a five metre scrum against the head to allow L’s No 9 to cross for a try which he converted himself and a breakaway try, again improved, followed immediately to put the home side out of sight at 39-10.It was now one way traffic with the hosts running riot and looking likely to score at will almost every time they got their hands on the ball. Two more tries in quick succession stretched the lead to 49-10 and with their threes all at sea KC’s looked in danger of capitulating completely but the forwards refused to lie down and actually had the home side under the cosh for the next twenty minutes until they somehow lost possession right on Leamington’s tryline and could only watch as they went the length of the field for their eighth try.To their credit KC’s pack kept plugging away and three minutes before time McLellan joined a ruck under Leamington’s posts to plunge over for a try, converted by Pinner,to make the score a little more respectable.
This was, however,a dark day for KCRFC and it will be a real test of their character when they take on fellow strugglers Pershore at home on Saturday in the last League fixture before the Christmas break.
