Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....
This was much, much better by KC’s and the bonus point win took them ten points clear of their local rivals and also above Upton on Severn.
Not surprisingly in view of their lowly League positions, both sides started nervously with KC’s failing to find touch with two early penalties and Pershore kicking the ball dead with their first effort but Kidder soon showed they were up for the contest as they took the game to the visitors.A break by flyhalf Chris Pinner from a lineout and a good supporting run by centre Nick Martin won a penalty, unfortunately missed, and a kick to the corner saw the home side drive over from the throw in only to be held up over the line.Prop Matt Rigsby was then stopped just short but KC’s were attacking in waves ,typified by a penetrating burst from blindside Tom Maher.Another close range lineout caused Pershore problems but they were able to relieve the pressure when awarded a penalty and appeared to have weathered the storm until with twenty five minutes played fullback Andy McLellan led a KC’s breakout from their own line up the right touchline before slipping a pass to No 14 Will Varley, who had intelligently cut inside, and the winger raced away for a try close to the posts which Pinner converted for a 7-0 lead.
The hosts were pegged back when they were penalised at a ruck just fifteen metres from their line and the visitors’ No 10 knocked over the penalty but Kidder stormed back on to the attack and were again denied from a lineout drive, this time either as a result of the ref being unsighted or a knock on – take your pick! Two minutes before the interval a Pershore kick out of defence was run back at them by KC’s and with backs and forwards combining well,Rigsby broke through despairing tackles to run in from twenty metres. With the last kick of the half Pershore missed a presentable penalty opportunity but KC’s were full value for their 12-3 lead, having scored two tries without reply.
The next score was going to be important and five minutes into the second period McLellan found a good touch with a penalty from hand to set up yet another attacking lineout and the drive was finished off by Layton Wilkinson in trademark fashion.Pinner was becoming increasingly influential and his break freed Martin whose well taken try, improved by Pinner, extended KC’s lead to 24-3 and secured a vital bonus point.Kidder were now well on top and Pinner, dancing his way through a crowd of Pershore players, found the ever willing Maher who made good ground down the right wing before the ball was switched wide to the left and KC’s looked certain to score until the final pass did not quite go to hand. The visitors’ reprieve was, however, shortlived as a Pinner penalty midway through the half from almost the ten metre line made the game safe.
The hosts suffered a bit of a wobble when second row Jack Tunstall went off injured and Pershore pounded their line with a succession of tap penalties before eventually moving the ball wide to create space for a converted try which gave them a glimmer of hope but KC’s held firm and the result was a much needed boost going into the Christmas break. The next League fixture is at home to second placed Newbould on Saturday 7th January.
