Committed KC's undone by controversial decision

Report provided by KC Press Secretary Martin Easton.....

KC’s were desperately unlucky not to take something from this game after pushing second in the table Newbold all the way with a terrific fully committed performance which really deserved some reward.
They had the best possible start when the visitors failed to deal with the kick off and conceded a lineout from which KC’s set up a drive that Newbold could only halt illegally. With no advantage accruing,Kidder kicked the penalty to touch and this time their lineout drive was unstoppable, resulting in a try for No 8 Layton Wilkinson which was well converted by flyhalf Chris Pinner to establish a 7-0 lead with only two minutes on the clock.
With ten minutes played Newbold’s No 10 knocked over a penalty from the 22 metre line but five minutes later KC’s nearly scored again when a tap tackle brought down centre Nick Martin just short of the line.Aware of the threat posed by the visitors’ backs,KC’s were right in their faces and a bit of niggle began to creep into the game but another fine run by the lively Martin caused Newbold more problems and only a missed Kidder penalty chance prevented the high fliers falling further behind. However, three minutes before the break Newbold took the lead for the first time with a try under the posts, duly converted, after a couple of quickly taken tap penalties found a hole in KC’s defence and the home side went into the interval trailing 10-7.
Three minutes into the second period Pinner made a break and floated a pass to Martin who just squeezed in at the left corner, the ref awarding the try although Newbold thought he had either made contact with the corner flag before touching down or had not grounded the ball properly.12-10 ahead,KC’s had a let off when Newbold missed a penalty from in front of the sticks but the hosts were now putting together some good phases, playing rousing rugby which had the visitors rocking, but then came a pivotal incident in the game – a real Specsavers moment!Fullback Andy McLellan dropped a goal which soared between the posts but to his amazement, and that of everyone else, the referee claimed to be unsighted and did not allow the score.Undeterred,KC’s continued to press and forced a five metre scrum but could not take advantage and another penalty miss on the half hour also let the visitors off the hook.Three minutes later KC’s were made to pay when they allowed Newbold’s fullback to break out from his own 22 and feed his winger who raced away for a try under the posts. The conversion put Newbold 17-12 in front and, irony of ironies, they then extended the lead with a drop goal which went over off a post. This was pretty hard for KC’s to take and with the Warwickshire side now playing their best rugby of the afternoon Kidder conceded again as Newbold crossed for their third try, although there was a suggestion of a double movement.
A second try for Martin in the last minute reduced the arrears to eight points and a successful conversion would have earned KC’s a losing bonus point which nobody could have begrudged them but unfortunately it was not to be.Nevertheless, this display showed that they can mix it with one of the best sides in the division and should put them in good heart for the rest of the season.
