Kidderminster Carolians recorded their first victory in 10 years against Old Laurentians with a 34-16 final score yet the final feeling amongst players and coaches was that there is still better to come in terms of performance!
Both sides started with attacking running rugby and it looked slightly ominous for the home side as the powerful Laurentians side were kept at bay by steadfast defence. The breakthrough after 19 minutes came when Ryan Tiene showed great power and pace to score an unconverted try. The resolute Laurentians side quickly evened the score after some good driving play by their forwards released the backs to score a well taken but unconverted try. Ryan Tiene was a constant threat in attack and scored his second try in the 34th minute after excellent handling and sustained pressure by Carolians.
Superb defence close to the line meant Kidderminster were able to restrict O. Ls to just an additional penalty before the interval.
Following some focussed discussion at half time the Kidderminster forwards came increasingly into the game and after a series of strong driving mauls Matt Rigsby scored an unconverted try to extend the Carolians lead. Rhys Pritchard further extended this gap with a well taken breakaway try after great defence resulted in turn over ball.
Birthday boy Jess Smith added to the scoring with strong running and a try in the 77th minute which Chris Pinner added to with a converted try late in the game. Old Laurentians showed great resilience and spirit to finish the game with a converted try.
Both sides played attacking rugby throughout with the referee Michael Patz having a great game and supporting the players attempts to run the ball superbly!
The full clubhouse and great team spirit after the game underlined the potential of this young side who face a north midland shield game again Harborne at home on Saturday!
