Rugby St Andrew 30 - Kidderminster Carolians 51
Match report courtesy of Ian Bletcher
It’s not often a side scores 9 tries away from home in a league match and is disappointed with the performance!
However, KC's were left feeling they could have done better against new opponents Rugby St Andrews in the home of the game.
The large number of travelling Kidderminster supporters who went to the game enjoyed the running rugby in superb conditions.
St Andrews opened the scoring after two minutes with a penalty near the post, however the Carolians forwards quickly responded from the kick off and after several close drives Dave Kane touched down for the opening try. The conversion was missed and this continued to be a feature of Kidderminster’s game.
The game was open and it wasn’t long before the excellent Arthur Morgan scored his first try after 10 minutes, the conversion was narrowly missed. St Andrews added a further penalty to take the score to 10-6 at the end of the opening quarter. Arthur Morgan added a fine try which underlined his man of the match performance after 23 minutes and this was one of the few tries converted by KC's. A lapse in defence and some good driving play by St Andrews led to them reducing the gap with a converted try. This was quickly followed by a successful penalty leaving the score at 16-17 to KC's approaching half time. Nerves were settled by two unconverted tries by the dynamic Ryan Tiene either side of half time. With the score of 27-16 in favour of KC’s. Substitutes Lee Wilkes and Matt Rigbsy were introduced and added fresh impetus leading to tries by Scott Lovell {unconverted} and Rhys Pritchard which was converted by Freddie Morgan. With the score at 39-16 it was perhaps inevitable that KC’S dropped their intensity and this allowed St Andrews to score a converted try with some great support play.
Simon Clarke added a fine try converted by Pinner to extend the lead and this was particularly pleasing as KC’S were down to 14 following a yellow card for a technical offence. Good driving play by the St Andrews pack led to a converted giving them their final score of thirty points.
KC's finished the game strongly as has been the pattern this season and a final unconverted try by Alex Royal brought about the final score of 30-51 to the away side!
Despite the comprehensive score it was agreed by the coaches and players that much work needs to be done to ensure the next few weeks of tough matches are not so error strewn and inconsistent in terms of performance! The great squad spirit was underlined by some excellent individual tries and the players awarding their choice of man of the match to Arthur Morgan
