This was a must win game for KC against an in-form Nuneaton Old Edwardian side who were fourth in the league.
The first fifteen minutes were controlled by Nuneaton OE, winning possession in the set piece and line outs and thus starving KC of possession. Nuneaton OE opened the scoring with a converted try under the posts and it looked like KC could well be chasing the game. As KC worked their way back Into the game a loose ball was passed to Ryan Tiene who made one of his typical powerful runs from the halfway line to score the first try. Further KC pressure and good work in the loose gave a short pass for Andy McLellan to score. Both these tries being converted by Freddie Morgan.
Nuneaton OE were proving doughty opponents and came back to level the score when their centre, receiving a long pass, cut back inside to score a converted try. Just before halftime good work from KC forwards yielded a penalty close to the Nuneaton OE line. Taking a quick tap, more pressure from the forwards in a series of mauls yielded a try by Matt Rigsby. This giving KC halftime lead of 19-14. A minute into the second half Chris Pinner kicked through from the Nuneaton OE 10 metre line, Arthur Morgan followed up and dribbling the ball scored in the corner for the bonus point try. The lead increased when Freddie Morgan kicked a penalty to take the score to 27-14.
KC then received two yellow cards, Rigsby for a scrummage offence and McLellan playing as a wing forward for obstruction. Nuneaton OE taking advantage of their numerical superiority scored a try through their backs with an overlap, missing the conversion but bringing them back to 27-19. KC realising that they needed to keep the ball in the forwards and following several good phases Chris Pinner eventually fed Jess Smith for a try. KC were now playing well and a good break by Chris May-Miller in the KC half made ground and fed Ryan Tiene to score wide out with a powerful 50 metre run.
KC forwards were now getting the upper hand and receiving a penalty kicked to 12 metres from the Nuneaton OE line. From the line out a series of good moves gave Chris Pinner a try under the posts, Freddie Morgan converting. Maybe KC relaxed knowing the game was safe and Nuneaton OE came back with a try through their backs, The last event was a penalty to KC converted by an increasingly confident Freddie Morgan to take the score to 46-24 at the final whistle. It says a lot for the character of the team and their defensive ability to make the game safe in the second half particularly when playing without the two yellow carded players.
KC are now neck and neck with Old Laurentians to end the season second in the league to qualify for the play-off for promotion, it all rests on the final games next weekend.
