On Sponsors Day KCs produced another good team effort against probably the most complete team we have met this season, Lichfield showing why they are near the top of this league.
Credit has to be given to KC for their efforts in defence against the well drilled Lichfield backs, unfortunately KC chose this game to knock on more balls than in any previous game. Soaking up continual pressure brought about a brief lack of focus which gifted Lichfield at least three tries. In total Lichfield scored five tries in each half, seven of which were well earned by their well-drilled three quarters.
As in previous games KC had periods when they took the game to the opposition and were unlucky not to score several times as they went through the phases to go close. The forwards do the club proud and KC did eventually get over for a try just before half time. Simon Clarke jinked his way through and outpaced the Lichfield defence to score, the conversion was missed to take the half time score to 5-31.
Tom Mayer – Mr Consistent - was prominent in most aspects of the game, winning several lineouts and as number 8 picking up and making good ground from set scrums. Tom, in his role as captain, is good at motivating the team and keeping them positive when the opposition are taking control. All action Scott Lovell showed great enthusiasm, making thrusting runs into the opposition half testing the Lichfield defence. Other good contributions came from Andy McLellan and Alex Hopkirk in the backs; Matt Rigsby, Rhys Kaye and Mike Protheroe in the forwards.
The KC team is developing well as the season goes on and the younger players are beginning to make their mark, well supported by the more experienced heads. The effort both in attack and defence will eventually pay dividends and achieve a deserved victory.
