This game was always going to be difficult with DK being top of the league and KC at the bottom. Any cracks in KC defence were seized upon as KC were overwhelmed by the pace and dominance of the DK three-quarters. DK obviously remembering from earlier in the season that KC strength was in loose play and therefore fed the ball wide at every opportunity.
Players making good tackles were Captain Mike Protheroe, Tom Mayer and man of the match Ryan Tiene. Full Back Will Fallows showed safe hands under high balls.
With a score line such as this you could think it was all one-way traffic, however KC had several good moves into the DK half, unfortunately breakdowns and interceptions all seemed to go in DK favour.
In the last 15 minutes KC came back into the game with two great moves which produced the best tries of the game. Chris Pinner was his usual all action in defence and attack.
The first try was initiated by Will Fallows who passed for Matt Parker to score a great individual 60 metre try. The eighteen year old used the opportunity well, firstly with 3 hand-offs and then cutting inside to beat 2 further players to score near the posts. Andy McLellan made the conversion.
The second KC try was a real team effort, Rhys Kay, gathering the ball close to the right-hand touch just into the DK half, gave a quick pass to Ryan Tiene who made 10 metres and fed to Pinner who flicked onto Andy McLellan. McLellan then made an accurate cross kick fielded by Alex Royall who, after a positive hand-off, fed Will Fallows to score wide out on the left.
These two tries illustrate the never say die attitude of the players even when the score board is showing against them.
