KC’s 29 Bedworth 7 KC’s third league win on the spin maintained their 100% home record and moved them up to 3rd place in Mids 2 West (South).
KC’s kicked off and wasted no time in utilising the strong wind at their backs to set up field position and they opened their account inside two minutes when centre Laurence Hughes broke through the tackles and stretched out an arm to touch down for the first try which Chris Pinner converted for a 7-0 lead. The visitors had more of the play for the next ten minutes but a thirty metre penalty attempt fell short and KC’s were able to clear the ball to Bedworth’s ten metre line. From the throw their No 10’s kick was taken by KC’s left wing Arthur Chiverton and his penetrating run took play up to the visitors 22.He was penalised for not releasing but with KC’s swarming all over them Bedworth still could not clear their lines and with quarter of an hour played flyhalf Andy McLellan cut through for a try which Pinner improved to put the hosts ahead 14-0.A secure catch from the restart produced more good ball for McLellan and his break and kick behind Bedworth’s defence put KC’s straight back in their 22 where they remained encamped with a series of penalties, free kicks, lineouts and scrums, twice being held up over the line, before an interception by the visitors left wing briefly stemmed the onslaught.Superb KC’s scrummaging and good work on the floor soon put them back on the front foot and the relentless pressure eventually told on the half hour when McLellan seized on a loose ball and strolled over unopposed for his second try, again converted by Pinner.Bedworth had the better of the last ten minutes of the half but their most threatening attack was impressively snuffed out by fullback James Whitehouse and KC’s went into the break with a healthy 21-0 cushion.
It was a question of whether this would be enough with the elements against them in the second half but KC’s began with some really disciplined rugby, twice working the ball from their own 22 deep into Bedworth territory to earn a penalty which Pinner put over to extend the lead to 24-0,a huge boost. As expected, the visitors then put Kidder under the cosh but the home side’s defence held firm until McLellan was yellow carded at a ruck and within a minute Bedworth’s No 11 crossed for a try which, unusually, was converted by their loosehead prop!
Bedworth continued to press and KC’s were a little fortunate when a clearance kick was charged down and the ball rebounded over the dead ball line before an attacker could lay a hand on it but moments later McLellan plucked a pass from around his ankles to continue a breakout which took play right up to Bedworth’s five metre line.KC’s pack shunted the visitors off their scrum ball, only to be held up yet again, but from their own put in they worked the short side to send McLellan in at the corner for his hat trick try and another bonus point win.
KC’s have now racked up six bonus points in six games, more than any other side in the division, and it is a measure of their progress and expectations this season that post match the players were disappointed they had not won more convincingly even though they had edged the second half 8-7 when playing into the wind and had put in a thoroughly professional performance.
