KC's Blow Shipston away in the rain

KC's Blow Shipston away in the rain

Bob Davies14 Apr 2013 - 13:50

KC's put in a sparkling performance both in attack and defense ...

KC’s emphatic six try bonus point win against struggling Shipston ensured a third place finish in Mids 2 West (S) with a game to spare and they deserve no less after racking up 78 points without reply in their last two league fixtures.KC’s swarmed all over Shipston from the kick off and with less than two minutes played were held up over the visitors’ tryline. They worked the short side from the scrum ,only to knock on at the right hand corner, but they disrupted Shipston’s put in and opted for another scrum which resulted in a try for No 8 Layton Wilkinson.Shipston responded with a brief spell of territory but a break by flyhalf Chris Pinner soon put them on the back foot again and the No 10 knocked over a penalty to extend the lead to 8-0.Only a minute later Shipston were yellow carded in a desperate attempt to prevent another score and were punished by Pinner’s penalty. The miserable wet weather was proving something of a leveller and KC’s could not really make their superiority tell but head coach Ian Bletcher did not waste any time in utilising his strong bench and on the half hour brought on skipper Rob Delahay and winger Mitchell Hardwick. The changes paid off within five minutes as Alex Baldwin crashed over and Pinner’s conversion put KC’s ahead 18-0 although they finished the half with fourteen men when Wilkinson was shown yellow.Despite being a man short,KC’s quickly established early second half dominance but were denied by some dogged Shipston defence.Restored to full strength,a series of KC’s forwards drives from their ten metre line took play deep into the visitors’ half to win a penalty which was kicked to touch.Shipston knocked on at the lineout and KC’s went over from the five metre scrum but lost the ball.Shipston survived a number of other narrow escapes but it was one way traffic and as Kidder looked for the breakthrough Bletcher rotated his subs again. The change reaped dividends almost immediately when prop Ben Turner finished off an unstoppable catch and drive ,improved by Pinner for a 25-0 lead. From the restart KC’s attacked from deep and another Pinner break took play to within ten metres of Shipston’s line.A knock on gave the visitors a chance to relieve the pressure but they lost the ball on their own put in and in trying to rescue the situation they conceded a penalty.Unsurprisingly,KC’s opted for another scrum and a pushover try for Wilkinson clinched the bonus point.KC’s were then awarded a free kick when Shipston delayed the throw at a lineout and Chris Baldwin powered over for the home side’s fifth try.Hillandale Caravans of the match Chris Pinner, who kicked six out of eight attempts at goal, added the extras and some splendid interpassing by forwards Jack Tunstall and Chris Baldwin with not much room to work in along the left touchline released flanker Rob Phillips for the final try to finish off a Shipston side who worked hard throughout but just could not live with the level of intensity which KC’s managed to sustain despite the difficult conditions and in the face of Kidder’s solid defence the visitors never remotely looked like troubling the scorers.KC’s round off their league campaign with a home fixture on 20th April against Earlsdon.
