KC's return to winning ways in style

KC's produce some excellent running rugby to see off a spirited Old Coventrians....

Match Report Courtesy of Martin Easton...

The hairdryer treatment dished out by head coach Ian Bletcher after two unacceptable performances certainly had the desired effect as a vastly improved display on VP’s and Sponsors Day saw KC’s romp to a six try bonus point win which moved them up to sixth spot in Mids 2 West (South).
Kidder, clearly motivated, came flying out of the blocks and went ahead after five minutes with some fluent phases spearheaded by the Baldwin twins and centre Rhys Pritchard which put flyhalf George Morgan in under the posts for a try converted by scrumhalf Chris Pinner.A fired up KC’s continued to pile on the pressure and with ten minutes on the clock second row Jack Tunstall finished off some more sparkling rugby to extend the lead to 12-0.
Rookie fullback Harry MacBeth and debutant wing John Cartwright both showed safe hands and strong running to keep the visitors on the back foot and on the half hour mark KC’s won a lineout on Cov’s ten metre line from which Layton Wilkinson set up a ruck.Pinner was almost scragged but broke free from the fringes and easily rounded the fullback for a fine individual try which he converted himself.Only two minutes later another good carry by Wilkinson produced more ruck ball which was moved left to veteran winger Eddie Ross who appeared to score in the corner but was adjudged to have put a foot in touch.KC’s were, however, not to be denied and after breaks by flanker Mike Protheroe,Pritchard and Morgan all broke down when a try looked on the cards they turned defence into attack by winning turnover ball on their own five metre line and with Cartwright leading the way launched a counter attack which culminated in Rob Phillips,on as a replacement centre for the injured Jake Evetts, running round under the posts for a bonus point try, improved by Pinner to give the hosts a comfortable 24-0 interval advantage.
Seven minutes into the second period Covs opened their account, working the ball right from a ruck under Kidder’s posts to their No 14 who crossed for a converted try.At this stage KC’s were dropping off a bit but they got back on track when Morgan prodded an astute kick through the visitors defence and livewire hooker Tom Maher won the foot race to make it 29-5.
Despite the scoreline,Kidder had been struggling somewhat in the set pieces but following the introduction of prop James Rigsby at halftime they won three successive scrums against the head to enable them to dictate field position. However,it was the visitors who struck next with a rather fortuitous try when a long clearance kick saw the ball land on it’s point and bounce straight back into the arms of their right wing who cantered under the posts for a converted try which reduced the arrears to 29-12.
Five minutes later a terrific kick to touch by Pinner took play deep into Cov’s territory and KC’s won the lineout. They went through the phases and blindside Alex Baldwin touched down for another fine try ,converted by Pinner. The visitors were visibly tiring but nonetheless it took a wonderful try saving tackle by the impressive Protheroe to deny them another score and KC’s then wrapped things up when they pressurised Covs into making mistakes in their own 22 and Pritchard,Hillandale Caravans man of the match, seized on a loose ball to go under the posts for try number six and Pinner duly added the extras.
This was much more like it by a rejuvenated KC’s side with the forwards sticking to their task and the backs lively all afternoon but they will need to maintain this level of performance if they are to take anything from a tricky looking fixture at Old Leamingtonians next Saturday.
