KC's blow Dunlop away to secure another 5 point bonus win....

Match Report courtesy of Martin Easton...

A scintillating eight try second half display by KC’s blew away their Coventry visitors who were competitive in the first period but simply could not live with the high tempo handling game of the hosts after the interval and the bonus point win was Kidder’s third on the bounce in Mids 2 West (S).
In the opening minutes fullback Andy McLellan’s line kicking and comfortable takes under Dunlop’s clearances were influential but despite some good attacking phases KC’s had nothing to show for their early dominance, began to concede penalties and were hampered by the loss of the injured Jake Evetts who was replaced at centre by Rob Phillips. They could in fact have gone behind when Dunlop missed a kickable penalty but should have taken the lead when Phillips received a long pass from McLellan and fed Laurence Hughes. The winger could have gone for the line himself but opted to pass inside to hooker Tom Maher who was held up, although Dunlop’s reprieve was short lived as from the resultant five metre scrum No 9 Chris Pinner darted round the narrow side for the opening try.
A knock on at the restart gifted Dunlop possession and field position and they launched a series of attacks which Kidder resisted with some solid defence until they struggled at a scrum and after Dunlop’s powerful inside centre had created mayhem his midfield partner found space to go over for a converted try which put them ahead 7-5.Dunlop then drove over from a five metre lineout but were held up and when they were penalised at the scrum flyhalf George Morgan was able to relieve the danger with a fine penalty kick to touch.
With half an hour played Kidder were themselves held up after driving over the line from a throw ten metres out but five minutes later they swiftly moved the ball wide to Hughes from a free kick and this time he made no mistake as he outpaced the cover to run around under the posts for a try which Morgan converted to give KC’s a 12-7 lead.On the stroke of halftime skipper Rob Delahay finished off a lineout drive to extend the hosts’ advantage to 17-7 but the match appeared to be still very much in the balance.
However, just two minutes into the second half KC’s kicked a penalty to Dunlop’s five metre line and Layton Wilkinson drove over from the lineout to secure the bonus point.Three minutes later Mitchell Hardwick broke from inside his own half to go under the posts for a lovely individual try, improved by Pinner who had taken over the kicking duties. After a loose ball had been kicked through by Kidder, Hardwick forced the covering defender back into his own in goal area to concede a five metre scrum from which the centre was able to go under the posts again for his second try.Pinner converted and Wilkinson quickly added another five points to put rampant KC’s out of sight at 41-7,having blitzed the shell shocked visitors with four tries in only twelve minutes.
There was brief respite for the Coventry side when some careless Kidder play outside Dunlop’s 22 allowed them to hack the ball upfield and score a converted try to reduce the arrears to 41-14 but the home side responded by running riot, attacking from all areas of the field.Maher rounded off some fluid handling with a try at the right corner,an outside break by Nick Martin was foiled by the last defender and a tap tackle brought down Hughes in full flight with the line beckoning.Dunlop tried to stem the tide but KC’s pack was now pushing them off their own ball at will and it was no surprise when Wilkinson went over for his third try from a five metre scrum.Pinner’s excellent conversion from wide out stretched the lead to 53-14 and a Morgan break was backed up by more slick passing to put Hillandale Caravans man of the match Hardwick in for his own hat trick.Right on the whistle Pinner dodged through a weary Dunlop defence for the final try,KC’s eleventh of the afternoon, and his conversion completed the rout.
KC’s face a stiff test next week when they travel to league leaders Earlsdon but after this result and performance they will certainly do so with confidence sky high
