KC’s fine run of form continued with a win at Spartans which was founded on sound defence and a rampant forwards performance. In the process they leapfrogged their opponents to move into second place in Mids 2 West (S) and having amassed no less than 41 points in their last nine matches the Marlpool Lane side will now have to be taken as serious promotion contenders.
Playing with the slope but against a strong wind on a difficult surface,KC’s saw very little of the ball in the opening ten minutes and fell behind to an early Spartans penalty. However, they soon got into their stride and hit back when scrumhalf Chris Pinner worked the narrow side and following an interchange of passes involving left wing Laurence Hughes centre Mitchell Hardwick was put in for a try.A yellow card reduced the home side to fourteen men and KC’s extended their lead to 10-3 when No 8 Layton Wilkinson went over. Before the conversion could be attempted torrential rain, hail and lightening gave the ref no option other than to take the players off the pitch but the storm abated after a ten minute break and play resumed.
Solid at the scrum and lineout and effective at the breakdown,KC’s were playing the conditions well with their forwards continually driving Spartans back and before the interval second row Alex Baldwin added a third try which was close enough to the posts to enable flyhalf George Morgan to convert for a 17-3 halftime advantage.
As the second half progressed Spartans tried to run the ball from all areas of the field but although they had a couple of spells of pressure good KC’s tackling forced them into errors and prop Matt Rigsby secured another bonus point with the fourth try after replacement lock Jack Tunstall had put in the hard yards.Despite some huffing and puffing the home side were never really a serious threat and by and large KC’s remained in control to see out the game fairly comfortably.
KC’s next scheduled fixture is a friendly at Ludlow on Saturday 1st February.
