This much anticipated clash between the two in form teams in Mids 2 West (S) did not disappoint and credit must go to both sides for putting on a ten try thriller in really difficult conditions.
The fierce wind which was blowing diagonally from corner to corner favoured KC’s in the first half and they went ahead after ten minutes when scrumhalf Chris Pinner took a tap penalty and almost got over before strong rucking saw lock Alex Baldwin cross the whitewash.Four minutes later left wing Laurence Hughes dotted down under the posts with an interception try from just inside the Bull’s half and the conversion by flyhalf George Morgan gave the home side a healthy 12-0 lead.
Kidder continued to have the better of things for the next ten minutes but then inexplicably lost their way and a Banbury breakaway out of defence sparked off a period of concerted attacks which was rewarded with a try for centre James Heywood. The visitors now had their tails up and taking advantage of a blatant knock on and/or offside they burst down the left touchline to send in hooker Andy Ell for a try which put them right back in the mix at 12-10.The wind took KC’s restart over the deadball line and from the resultant scrum on halfway Banbury made ground via a lineout and a penalty to create a chance for their scrumhalf and skipper Ed Phillips to go over for a third try which put them in front 15-12 five minutes before the interval and, having gone completely off the boil,KC’s could consider themselves somewhat fortunate to be on level terms when Morgan slotted a penalty just before the halftime whistle.
Kidder needed to regroup but just three minutes into the second period Banbury’s flyhalf Alex Fogavini broke through three weak tackles to run in from the ten metre line for a try under the posts which secured a bonus point and the No 10’s conversion gave them a 22-15 lead.Fogavini was now beginning to run the game, cleverly mixing up his kicks with huge wind assisted clearances and astute grubbers and chips over the top keeping KC’s at full stretch and when Heywood won a foot race to touch down for his second try the visitors had a 27-15 advantage.
KC’s could have crumbled at this stage but they seemed to find a new lease of life and a try by second row Chris Baldwin gave them renewed belief.Banbury were now under the cosh and when their No 6 was yellow carded Kidder took immediate advantage.A couple of quickly taken tap penalties by Pinner set up a series of forwards drives in Banbury’s red zone and the No 9 darted over for a try which Morgan converted to level the match at 27-27.
At this point, with a quarter of an hour still to play,it looked as though the home side might go on and win the game but the visitors weathered the storm and created an overlap on the left which fullback Carl Daniels exploited to cross for the killer try which Fogiani, most peoples’ man of the match, improved and he then added a late penalty to seal KC’s fate and leave them having to settle for a four try losing bonus point.
This was a closely fought encounter between two very evenly matched sides but over the eighty minutes Banbury were just that little bit better on the day and were good value for their win which condemned KC’s to only their second home defeat of the season and saw the Oxfordshire outfit become the first side to do the double over them.Nonetheless,Kidder remain in second spot and will be looking to get back on track when they visit bottom of the table Bedworth next week.
