Kidder were fast out of the blocks with a try inside the opening two minutes.Fullback Jordan Hatch fielded a Veseyan kick deep in his own half and when he was tackled the ruck ball was spun right with good hands and young winger Freddie Morgan cut inside to take the final pass and run in under the posts to make the conversion a formality for flyhalf Chris Pinner. However,if the hosts thought they were in for an easy afternoon they were mistaken as it soon became clear that Veseyans were intent on slowing the game down at every opportunity and keeping the ball in their heavy pack to try and wear KC’s down and frustrate their runners.Just after the quarter of an hour mark the visitors tactics paid off when they kicked a penalty to touch inside Kidder’s 22 and rumbled over from the lineout to reduce the deficit to 7-5.
KC’s tried to up the tempo and a rare foray into Veseyans’ 22 won them an eminently kickable penalty but the chance was missed and the game became very scrappy with both teams guilty of a series of knock ons which neither side could take advantage of.With halftime approaching KC’s stole a Veseyan lineout but lost the ball in the middle of the pitch and the visitors were able to send in their right wing for a try which put them ahead 10-7.
Stern words were spoken at the interval and had the desired effect.Veseyans kick off did not go ten metres and from the scrum back on halfway No 8 Rob Phillips made ground into their 22.A good Kidder scrum put the visitors under pressure, forcing them to clear hastily into touch, and at the lineout KC’s gave them a dose of their own medicine as skipper Rob Delahay drove over to re-take the lead,12-10.Five minutes later, from a similar position Kidder pinched a Veseyan throw and their backs were caught offside.A quickly taken tap penalty by Pinner opened up their defence and Phillips,Hillandale Caravans man of the match, crashed over with Pinner converting to extend the advantage to a more comfortable 19-10.
From a scrum thirty metres out KC’s forwards launched a series of drives which increased the pressure on Veseyans and when their No 8 was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on Pinner kicked to touch to keep the visitors penned in their own 22 and midway through the half they cracked as Delahay burst from the fringes of a ruck to cross for the bonus point fourth try.
At this stage of the second period Veseyans had not threatened at all but after making good ground down the left touchline they briefly set up camp on Kidder’s tryline, only to be kept out by terrific defence which Pinner turned into attack and after some fluid phases Phillips outran the tiring cover for a fine try, improved by Pinner for a 31-10 lead.Despite Morgan being shown yellow,KC’s were now rampant and from a lineout close to their own line they again put the ball through hands and a marvellous run by Hatch took him almost up to Veseyans posts before he offloaded to flanker Mike Protheroe who had covered nearly the length of the pitch to be up in support.Pinner added the extras and with the visitors being run ragged he then went over for a try.Veseyans re-start kick was caught by centre Laurence Hughes who sped straight to the tryline without a hand being laid on him and amazingly KC’ had doubled their advantage from 24-10 to 48-10 within the space of eight minutes.
To their credit,Veseyans gave it a final go and some sloppy tackling let them in for a converted consolation third try but KC’s had the last word with a second Pinner try which brought up the half century.
